The Event Horizon Telescope, a global consortium of scientists, publishes the first ever image of a supermassive black hole. The image reveals the central black hole of Messier 87, a massive galaxy in the Virgo cluster, and becomes headline news around the world. It shows the silhouette of the black hole, which by definition emits no light, and its ‘shadow’, a ring of light created by photons zipping around it.
