The Mars Science Laboratory launches its Curiosity rover on a 560 million km journey to the Red Planet from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The car-sized rover is the largest and most capable ever sent to Mars. Its primary mission is an investigation of the Martian climate, geology and environmental conditions to determine if Mars is, or was once, suitable for microbial life – in preparation for future human exploration.
